Paddling is the engine room of surfing. Long periods in a prone, slightly extended position place load on the shoulders, mid-back, and lower back. Over time, limited thoracic mobility, postural habits, or muscular tightness may reduce paddling efficiency and increase fatigue.
Why paddling can feel harder than it should
- Prolonged extension during paddling can stress the lumbar spine and shoulders.
- Restricted thoracic rotation makes each stroke less effective, increasing effort.
- Muscle imbalances (e.g., tight chest/hip flexors, underactive deep trunk stabilisers) may alter mechanics and contribute to discomfort.
Research on surfers reports that overuse concerns commonly involve the back and shoulders, with paddling frequently identified as a contributing factor (Furness et al., 2014; 2021). Limited thoracic mobility and postural imbalance have been associated with higher fatigue and low-back discomfort during extended sessions (McGregor et al., 2020).
